Africa, Sudan, Magwi County, Nimule, Caught In Between, Northern Uganda/Southern Sudan - The young boy pictured here was abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and held for three months before his escape. He witnessed the LRA kill and cut up his mother with machetes. He was also forced to carry out killings while in the rebel group. Thousands of children have been abducted, attacked, witnessed the killing of their families, raped, mauled, become soldiers, porters and sex slaves for the LRA. The war in Northern Uganda began in 1986 between the Lord's Resistance Army and the Ugandan People's Defense Forces (UPDF). The LRA has reigned terror and carnage on Northern Uganda and Southern Sudan ever since. The rebels commonly abduct children to fuel their personnel needs and quickly turn them into soldiers, porters and sexual slaves. The ongoing war has significantly damaged the region and has left an ongoing burden on the local population. December 2005 © Stephen Blake Farrington
