Africa, Sudan, Magwi County, Olikwi Village, Caught In Between, Northern Uganda/Southern Sudan - A fire burns near the insecure village of Olikwi, now deserted. The village is an entrance for rebels into the greater vicinity. Fires burn in the area for two reasons, one for hunters to corner game, and two to keep high grass down making the area less vulnerable to rebel attacks. The war in Northern Uganda began in 1986 between the LRA and the Ugandan People's Defense Forces (UPDF). The LRA has reigned terror and carnage on Northern Uganda and Southern Sudan ever since. The rebels commonly abduct children to fuel their personnel needs and quickly turn them into soldiers, porters and sexual slaves. The ongoing war has significantly damaged the region and has left an ongoing burden on the local population. December 2005 © Stephen Blake Farrington
