Africa, Sudan, Magwi County, Nimule, Southern Sudan - The woman pictured here resting at Merlin Hospital was shot by the Lord's Resistance Army during an ambush in the village of Mugale, about seven kilometers away, just a few days before. One other man was shot and killed. Since the attack the 15,000 inhabitants of Mugale have been making an exodus out of the village toward nearby Nimule. The war in the region began in 1986 between the Lord's Resistance Army and the Ugandan People's Defense Forces (UPDF). The LRA has reigned terror and carnage on Northern Uganda and Southern Sudan ever since. The ongoing conflict has significantly damaged the region and has left an ongoing burden on the local population. December 2005 © Stephen Blake Farrington
